In the Pietermaritzburg and surrounding areas, R25000 worth of food hampers were donated by Hulamin to various HIV/AIDS related projects. The projects identified were Woodlands Home, Asizame Futhi, Gezubuso Project; Thuthuka Community Centre; Edendale & Imbali Drop in Centre; SOS Village; Sunnyside; France Community and Ekujabuleni Project.
The feeding scheme is aimed at relieving hunger and malnutrition, promoting good nutrition and making sure that it is a great Christmas to all.
"Though the means of God grind slowly, they grind exceedingly!" says Thuthuka Community Centre's Nomsa Khanyile.Thuthuka Community Centre is a non profit organization with 75 foster children who are selected by teachers from Edendale, Esigodini, Smero and Georgetown area. "The children may be poor, with no parents but it is good to know that on Christmas they will have a decent meal on the table thanks to Hulamin." she adds.
Speaking to Juanita, project manager at Gezubuso, she explains "This year we have done something different in the best interests of the children; we have planned and sent them with foster mothers into the communities where the foster mothers live. The reason for this is so that each child will spend 4 weeks within a household. We feel that this way they will benefit by being able to see and feel how families celebrate the Christmas season both culturally and traditionally. As you can imagine this is a very expensive exercise as far as providing each 'family' with groceries so, the food parcels donated by Hulamin have really come handy thank you very, very much." Gezubuso is a home to HIV/AIDS orphans. The food hampers fed at least 140 families.
