With the Soccer World Cup around the corner, construction of major soccer stadia is underway in South Africa's main cities. The town of Pietermaritzburg has positioned itself to ensure that its local communities don't miss out on all the sporting excitement in the build up to 2010. The upgrade of the city's soccer stadia, Harry Gwala and Wadley, (the latter being located just up the road from Hulamin's Edendale plant), will provide training facilities to some of the international teams who will participate in the World Cup.
The refurbished Wadley Stadium was recently opened in grand style with the Hulamin Soccer Tournament - a SA Football Association tournament for Pietermaritzburg based teams which was sponsored by Hulamin in association with the Msunduzi Municipality.
The tournament comprised eight teams was held on Saturday 7 June and Sunday 8 June. The final served as a curtain raiser to the match between the South Africa U17 and Zimbabwe U17 teams. Hulamin's sponsorship consisted of soccer kits, sound system, VIP marquee and cash prizes for the four winning local teams.
